- MRI safety screening
- Changing into a gown if necessary
- Positioning on the MRI table
- The imaging exam itself
- Brief post-exam instructions

How Long Does the MRI Scan Itself Take?
The imaging portion of the appointment usually lasts between 20 and 60 minutes.
Simple studies, such as imaging a single joint, may be completed in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. More complex exams, including brain imaging, spine imaging, or multiple body regions, may take closer to 45 to 60 minutes or longer.

In many cases, MRI results are available within 24 to 72 hours. Some routine studies may be interpreted even sooner, while more complex examinations or specialty consultations can occasionally take longer.
Once the radiologist completes the report, it is sent to your referring physician, who discusses the findings with you and explains what they mean for your care.
Can I Leave Immediately After My MRI?
Most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after the exam.
