Many people feel nervous before their first MRI appointment, especially if they are unsure what to expect. Fortunately, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe, non-invasive procedure that helps physicians diagnose a wide range of conditions without using radiation.
Understanding the process ahead of time can make your appointment much more comfortable and help you feel prepared from the moment you arrive. Let’s take a look at a few things everyone should know.
Before Your Appointment
Your healthcare provider will schedule an MRI to evaluate a specific part of your body, such as the brain, spine, joints, or internal organs. Before the scan, you may receive instructions about eating, drinking, or taking medications, depending on the type of exam being performed.
When you arrive, you will complete a safety questionnaire. Because MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, the imaging team needs to know if you have any implanted medical devices, metal fragments, surgical clips, pacemakers, cochlear implants, or other metallic objects inside your body.
You will also be asked to remove items such as:
- Jewelry
- Watches
- Eyeglasses
- Hairpins
- Hearing aids
- Credit cards
- Cell phones
- Clothing with metal zippers or snaps
Many imaging centers provide a gown if necessary.
Preparing for the Scan
Before entering the MRI room, a technologist will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the reason for your exam, an intravenous (IV) contrast agent may be administered to improve visualization of certain tissues or blood vessels.
You will then lie on a padded table that slowly moves into the MRI scanner. Modern imaging centers often use wide-bore MRI systems, which provide a larger opening than traditional scanners. This design helps many patients feel more comfortable while maintaining excellent image quality.
Positioning is important because remaining still throughout the scan allows the machine to produce the clearest possible images.
During the MRI
The MRI machine uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create highly detailed images of your body’s internal structures. The procedure itself is painless. You will not feel the magnetic field or the imaging process.
One thing many first-time patients notice is the noise. The scanner produces loud tapping, knocking, or buzzing sounds as it collects images. You will usually receive earplugs or headphones to reduce the noise, and some facilities even allow patients to listen to music during the exam.
Throughout the scan, the technologist monitors you from a nearby control room and can communicate with you through an intercom. If you need assistance, you will typically have a call button that allows you to alert the technologist at any time.
Depending on the type of MRI, the exam may take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes.
After Your Appointment
Once the scan is complete, you can usually resume your normal daily activities immediately. If contrast material was used, your provider may recommend drinking extra water afterward to help your body eliminate it naturally.
A radiologist will carefully review your images and prepare a detailed report for your referring physician. Your healthcare provider will then discuss the results with you and explain any recommended next steps.
A Comfortable Experience with Advanced Imaging
Today’s MRI technology is designed to make imaging more comfortable and more accurate than ever before. High-resolution 3T MRI systems provide exceptional image detail that helps physicians detect subtle abnormalities, while wide-bore scanners improve patient comfort by offering a more open environment.
Combined with experienced imaging professionals and advanced diagnostic techniques, your first MRI appointment is typically a straightforward, safe, and valuable step toward understanding your health and developing the most appropriate treatment plan.
