If your doctor has recommended an MRI, you may have questions about how to prepare and what to expect. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the body’s internal structures.
Whether your scan is for your brain, spine, joints, or another part of the body, taking a few simple steps before your appointment can help ensure the exam goes smoothly and produces the best possible images.
Follow Any Pre-Appointment Instructions
When your MRI is scheduled, your healthcare provider or imaging center will give you specific preparation instructions. Many MRI exams require very little preparation, but some scans may involve dietary restrictions or the use of contrast material.
Be sure to carefully follow any instructions regarding:
- Eating or drinking before the exam
- Taking your regular medications
- Arrival time
- Required paperwork or identification
If anything is unclear, contact the imaging center before your appointment.
Inform Your Care Team About Medical Devices
MRI uses an extremely powerful magnetic field, making it essential to inform your technologist about any implanted medical devices or metal in your body.
Tell your care team if you have:
- A pacemaker or defibrillator
- Cochlear implants
- Brain aneurysm clips
- Artificial joints
- Surgical hardware
- Metal fragments from previous injuries
- Medication pumps or stimulators
Many modern implants are MRI compatible, but your imaging team must verify their safety before your exam begins.
Dress Comfortably
Wear loose, comfortable clothing if possible. Avoid clothing that contains metal zippers, snaps, buttons, or decorative metallic fibers, as these can interfere with the MRI scanner.
Before entering the scan room, you will also need to remove personal items such as:
- Jewelry
- Watches
- Hairpins
- Hearing aids
- Eyeglasses
- Wallets and credit cards
- Cell phones
Most facilities provide a secure place to store your belongings during the exam.
Discuss Claustrophobia or Anxiety
If you feel anxious about enclosed spaces, let your healthcare provider know before your appointment. Many imaging centers offer wide-bore MRI systems, which provide a larger opening and a more comfortable experience than traditional scanners.
The MRI technologist will also maintain communication throughout the scan, allowing you to ask questions or request assistance if needed. Knowing that someone is monitoring you throughout the exam often helps reduce anxiety.
Stay Relaxed and Remain Still
Once positioned on the MRI table, remaining as still as possible is one of the most important things you can do. Even small movements can blur the images and may require certain portions of the scan to be repeated.
The MRI machine will make loud knocking and tapping sounds during imaging, but this is completely normal. You will typically receive earplugs or headphones to reduce the noise, and some facilities may offer music to make the experience more relaxing.
Know What Happens Afterward
Most MRI exams take between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being examined. After the scan, you can usually return to your normal activities immediately. If contrast material was used, your provider may recommend drinking extra water to help your body eliminate it.
A radiologist will analyze the images and prepare a report for your referring physician, who will review the findings with you and discuss any recommended next steps.
Preparing for a Successful MRI
Preparing for an MRI is usually simple, but following these steps can help make your appointment more comfortable while ensuring the highest quality images. Advanced 3T MRI technology produces exceptionally detailed scans that assist physicians in diagnosing a wide variety of neurological, orthopedic, and other medical conditions. By arriving prepared and understanding the process, you can approach your MRI appointment with greater confidence and peace of mind.
